On Friday, 30 August 2024, the Bali International Arbitration and Mediation Center (BIAMC), in collaboration with the Faculty of Law at Tarumanagara University (UNTAR), successfully hosted a highly informative webinar on National and International Arbitration. Moderated by Frederick Reinhart, the BIAMC-UNTAR Law Faculty Student Ambassador, the event attracted over 200 registrants and was livestreamed to more than 300 viewers on BIAMC’s YouTube channel.
The audience was composed primarily of law students from universities across Indonesia, who made up 90% of the attendees. The remaining 10% included legal professionals, such as practicing lawyers, reflecting the broad interest in arbitration as a key mechanism for dispute resolution.
National and International Perspectives on Arbitration
The webinar featured distinguished speakers who shared insights into both national and international arbitration. R.M. Gatot P. Soemartono, S.E., S.H., M.M., LL.M., Ph.D., Chairman of the Center for Arbitration and ADR at UNTAR Law Faculty, presented an engaging session on “Understanding International Arbitration from an Indonesian Perspective.” His presentation provided a comprehensive overview of Indonesia’s approach to international arbitration, highlighting the country’s efforts to integrate arbitration into its legal framework and address commercial disputes effectively.
The second presentation was delivered by Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Rahmadi Supancana, Chief of Advisory Board at BIAMC, who explored “Steps in International Commercial Arbitration.” His detailed walkthrough of the arbitration process, from filing cases to enforcing awards across jurisdictions, gave participants a strong understanding of how arbitration operates on a global scale.
The energy throughout the session was exceptional, with participants eagerly engaging in discussions and a lively Q&A session. The presentations were well-received, providing attendees with valuable knowledge and perspectives on arbitration both from a national and international standpoint.
